How to buy a Car in Portugal

First, the person must have the Portuguese Tax Identification Number (NIF). An identification document is also required, which can be a valid passport or Residence Permit (AR). In addition, the buyer needs to prove that he lives in the country. In this case, both a proof of address and, in some opportunities, the AR itself can be accepted.

Possessing a driver's license is not mandatory to purchase a car in Portugal, but, of course, without the document it will not be possible to drive the vehicle.

One of the few differences in buying in Portugal is vehicle insurance. In Portuguese territory it is mandatory. The person responsible for the car must leave the store with the document in hand. The values depend on the contracted insurance company, the type of vehicle and the year.

Popular cars from 2007 onwards, for example, have, on average, an annual insurance rate starting at 300 euros, according to online simulators . Factors such as the age of the driver also influence the price of insurance, being higher for people aged 30 or younger, a practice allowed by the Insurance and Pension Funds Supervisory Authority (ASF).

The driver also needs to pay, annually, the Single Circulation Tax (IUC). The value depends on the model and year the vehicle was manufactured, among other factors. The amount to be paid can also be simulated online . The average for a popular car manufactured after the year 2017 is 400 euros.

Another annual process for anyone who owns a vehicle is the Mandatory Periodic Inspection. The measure is valid for those who own a vehicle with more than four years of use, counting from the date of manufacture. The value starts at 31.80 euros, according to the decree published in the Diário da República (DRE).

Dealers, stores and websites

The means to find the ideal car are dealerships, new or used car stores and websites. In addition to the cash purchase modality, there are means of financing, either directly with resellers or in banks. The need for an entry and the percentage of payment at the time of purchase is defined by each institution or store.

When the buyer purchases an already used vehicle, the deadline for transferring the documentation from the owner to the new buyer is 60 days. The procedure can be done online or at the Citizen's Shops. The value of the process starts at 20 euros and increases according to the circumstances, such as the number of transfers and plate changes, for example.

Other costs

In the largest Portuguese cities, such as Lisbon and Porto, most areas have paid parking, especially in the central regions. The Portuguese capital, for example, is divided into zones , with some being more expensive than others, ranging from 0.80 euros to 3 euros an hour.

The citizen inserts the coins in the parking meters or card according to the time he intends to park. The machines do not provide change. The maximum length of stay in the vacancy is four hours. In the defined black and brown areas, where demand is higher, parking time is only two hours. Another option is indoor locations. In Portugal, parking spaces are called parks.

On highways, known as highways, tolls are charged, which in Portugal is called “toll”. The cost varies depending on the segment. For a trip from Lisbon to Porto, for example, the value is 22.40 euros, according to the Via Verde simulator, the concessionaire responsible for tolls in the country.
