AIMA clarifies accommodation proof requirements for resident permit

Lisbon, Jan 06, 2026 – AIMA has issued an official clarification regarding proof of accommodation for the granting and renewal of Residence Permits in Portugal.

Applicants must always submit a personal declaration under oath, confirming their residential address and clearly stating the legal basis for using the property — ownership, lease, or loan for use. This declaration must be accompanied by supporting documents, such as a valid land registry certificate, a rental contract with the latest rent receipt, or a loan-for-use agreement.

If the applicant’s name does not appear on the rental or loan contract, additional documentation is required, including a sworn declaration identifying the property, the legal basis of residence, and the landlord’s details, along with a Tax Authority certificate issued within the last 30 days confirming the applicant’s fiscal address.

Special provisions apply to students, who may submit accommodation contracts arranged by educational institutions, certified declarations from schools, or proof of entitlement to housing in university residences.

AIMA also stresses that certificates issued by parish councils are not accepted, and that the number of residents declared per accommodation will be subject to verification.

A quiet but firm reminder: residency is more than a location — it is a legal bond that must be transparent, verifiable, and responsibly declared.
