Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) has made significant strides in addressing the backlog of over 400,000 pending residency applications, having processed more than 200,000 cases and issued at least 6,000 residence permits. This effort is supported by a €5.97 million investment in the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA), as outlined in Resolution No. 7/2025, published on January 21 in the Official Gazette.
This initiative, launched in September 2024, aims to clear the backlog by June 30, 2025. The funding will bolster AIMA’s operations, which include 20 service centers, by decentralizing services and enhancing partnerships with municipalities and civil society entities. Municipalities will receive €1.63 million to establish new service points, while €4.34 million will support sociocultural mediators and other resources to improve service delivery and immigrant integration.
By addressing the delays and improving service efficiency, the government seeks to support the labor market and enhance the living conditions of immigrants in Portugal.
