Anti-Elon Musk protest scheduled for Tesla stand in Lisbon on March 9

The stand of the American car manufacturer Tesla at El Corte Inglés, in Lisbon, could be the scene of a protest against the owner, Elon Musk, scheduled for March 9.

The demonstration is registered on the Tesla Takedown website, along with more than 50 protests on Saturday alone, in the United States, but also in the United Kingdom and Spain.

The protests are part of a growing backlash in North America and Europe against billionaire Musk's role in the administration of new US President Donald Trump and his drive to cut public spending through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

The head of Tesla, SpaceX and the social network X has begun dismantling several government agencies, which he accuses of fraud and wasteful management.

According to the US press, in recent days protests against Tesla have been recorded in cities such as Tucson and Palo Alto (southwest), Saint Louis (center), Dayton and Charlotte (east).

About 300 protesters demonstrated at a Tesla dealership in New York City on Saturday. Police said nine people were arrested but did not provide further details on the charges they face.

In Boston, also in the northeast, the protest had a festive atmosphere, with a brass band playing while protesters carried signs and shouted.

“This Trump and Musk-led administration has completely derailed and we are here to stop it,” said Carina Campovasso, a retired federal employee. “And I hope they listen,” she added.

Critics of Trump and Musk hope to discourage purchases of electric vehicles from Tesla, the world's most valuable automaker.

Liberal groups have been organizing anti-Tesla protests for weeks in hopes of galvanizing opposition to DOGE and energizing Democrats still demoralized by Trump's November presidential victory.

“We can get even with Elon,” said Nathan Phillips, a 58-year-old environmentalist from Newton, Massachusetts, who was protesting in Boston on Saturday.

"We can inflict direct economic harm on Tesla by showing up at booths everywhere, boycotting Tesla, and telling everyone else to get out, sell their stock, sell their Teslas," he explained.

Some owners have reported that their Tesla vehicles were vandalized with spray-painted swastikas, weeks after Elon Musk gave a Nazi salute.

Federal prosecutors have charged a woman in connection with a series of acts of vandalism at a Tesla dealership in Colorado (center), which included Molotov cocktails being thrown at vehicles.

Tesla's share price has fallen by almost a third since Trump took office, although it is still higher than it was a year ago. Musk's wealth is currently estimated by Forbes magazine at $359 billion.
