Immigrants from Algarve, Odemira, Lisbon and Porto are expected for the day when the debates in the Assembly of the Republic on immigration and nationality are resumed.
Immigrants working in Porto, Lisbon, Odemira and Algarve scheduled a demonstration on September 17 in front of the Assembly of the Republic at a time when there are 80 detainees in a temporary installation center in Portugal.
The revelation was made to Lusa by the former congressman of BE José Soeiro at the end of a meeting that took place on Tuesday, in Porto, among immigrants from various countries to try to aggregate as many people for the demonstration.
According to José Soeiro, the choice of the 17th is related to the fact that on that date "restarts the work in plenary in the Assembly of the Republic" and, on the agenda of the deputies, is the resumption of the "debate on the law of immigration and the law of nationality" two diplomas "returned to the Assembly of the Republic because of the lead of the Constitutional Court".
“And it is important that on that day, when this discussion is restarted, it takes into account the voice of thousands of immigrants who are mobilizing in the Algarve, Odemira, in Lisbon and Porto, to be in front of Parliament on the 17 at 2 pm,” explained the former deputy who spoke as a member of the Immigrant Solidarity Association.
Regarding the "80 immigrants arrested by determination of the Agency for Integration Migrations and Asylum (AIMA) for registering tickets in other countries before arriving in Portugal and not for having committed any crime", stressed José Soeiro, the deputy accused the government of "spending a lot of money in the criminal state in repressive policies against immigrant workers, building detention centers" emphasizing that "the State is using funds from the PRR that should be for housing to build workers".
“The State should be using this money to put public services, in particular AIMA, working to respect the law that is not being respected, to ensure the regularization of immigrants who have already been paying rebates here for two, three, four years,” he said.
In the context of the demonstration, an entourage of eight immigrants, representing the four origins in which they are working in Portugal, intends to deliver a document to the President of the Assembly of the Republic that contains the claims that are at the base of the protest.
The organization is in charge of the Immigrant Solidarity Association and the immigrant collective that organized in July the last protest against the Temporary Installation Center in Porto.
Immigrants claim the right to documents, family reunification, the release of detained immigrants in temporary installation centers without having committed any crime, as well as respect, dignity and justice.
