The goal is to prevent immigrants from having to visit Social Security offices twice to obtain their NISS (Social Security Identification Number)
Lisbon, July 14, 2026 — Starting at the end of this month, immigrants who go to the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) will automatically receive their Social Security Identification Number (NISS).
The measure was announced to the newspaper Público by the president of the Social Security Informatics Institute and is part of the digital transformation program that began last year to streamline services.
“When a ‘client’ arrives at AIMA to regularize their situation, currently AIMA says it needs the NISS (Social Security Number) and the NIF (Tax Identification Number) and sends people to various agencies. What we did was create a link between the two services, which allows the agency to enter the person's identification and we assign them the NISS in real time, without the person having to go to Social Security,” Luís Farrajota explained to the newspaper.
In 2025, around 250,000 immigrants had to go to Social Security offices twice just to request – and then collect – their identification number, overburdening the services.
