Immigration without control? Video of taximan harassment used by Ventura is from Egypt

André Ventura shared a video as if he were from a Portuguese taxi driver, but he passed in Egypt. The taxi driver was arrested.

The video

André Ventura, leader of Chega, shared in his account of the X what would be another proof of the “uncontrolled immigration price” in Portugal. In the video, you can see a taxi driver harassing a passenger.

The context

On Wednesday, the leader of Chega shared in X a video that allegedly illustrates the “price of uncontrolled immigration.” It is a taxi driver who continually addresses the passenger, clearly uncomfortable with the comments of harassment.

They speak in English and the passenger is clearly uncomfortable with the interactions of the driver of the vehicle. “Down,” pleads with him, while the taxi driver stares at his legs.

In the description of this sharing, André Ventura writes that “is this the result of an immigration without identity and without respect for women” and asks “will we really continue with open doors?”. But is this video real and happened in Portugal?

The facts

The video takes place in the Egyptian city of Sharm El-Sheikh and the driver was arrested after sharing the images taken by the passenger. The authorities decided to detain the taxi driver for 15 days, as a preventive measure and subject to renewal. He is accused of harassing a Chinese tourist.

According to the investigation, the suspect’s name is Amir.M.E., 30 years old and resides in the city of Tanta, in the province of Gharbia, but has settled for several years in Sharm El-Sheikh to work as a taxi driver. The suspect was subjected to medical tests that they concluded that, at the time of the event, he was under the influence of drugs.

The news was also given by BBC News Arabic, which broadcast the original video on the news. In this video, longer than the one shared by the president of the Arrival, it is possible to see the part where the driver turns to a translator on the phone to ask if he wants to go home with him. And it is also clear the “no, never” as an answer.

Also the Egyptian website Elshai.eg shared the news through Instagram, advancing more information. Despite the footage, no official complaints were filed but still, the authorities acted promptly after viewing the video on January 27. “The authorities continue to emphasize the importance of tourist safety and call on visitors to report any misconduct in order to ensure swift action,” the statement said.

The verdict

The video shared by the leader of Chega is true, however, it concerns a case of harassment that happened in Egypt with a Chinese tourist. None of the participants in this video is Portuguese nor the situation occurred in Portugal, as André Ventura seems to suggest by adding, in the caption, that “this is the result of an immigration without identity and without respect for women”.
