Lisbon Introduces Free Bicycle Program for Residents

Starting today, residents of Lisbon with a Navegante pass can avail themselves of free access to Gira bicycles throughout the city. This initiative, which was initially implemented for young individuals and seniors with the pass, has now been extended to all residents of Lisbon with a Navegante pass.

Previously, on May 26, the free pass was made available to all residents of Lisbon between the ages of 16 and 23, as well as citizens over the age of 65 who already possessed the Navegante pass.

The primary goal behind this measure, as stated by Mayor Carlos Moedas (PSD), is to make progress in decarbonizing the city. As of today, any resident of Lisbon with a tax domicile in the city can take advantage of this initiative by purchasing the pass. To utilize Gira bicycles for free, individuals between the ages of 16 and 23 and those over the age of 65 simply need to display their free Navegante pass on the mobile application.

For other residents, proof of residency must be provided at an EMEL store (Company for Mobility and Parking in Lisbon, responsible for managing Gira). This can be done by presenting any invoice or document confirming their residence. This allows them to use Gira bicycles free of charge, as explained by Carlos Moedas.

Currently, Gira boasts a fleet of over 1,000 bicycles, and the objective, according to Carlos Moedas, is to double that number to 2,000 in the near future.
