A Chega MP in the Lisbon Municipal Assembly was warned for associating the practice of some crimes with immigrant citizens during a debate on security in the capital.
Chega at the Lisbon Municipal Assembly held a debate on Tuesday (Nov 6) about “disturbances, contempt and insecurity in the city”, associating responsibility for some crimes with immigrant citizens, which earned the warning of the president of this deliberative body of the municipality.
The deputies from BE, PCP, PEV, Livre and two independents from Cidadãos Por Lisboa left the room to avoid participating in the debate. Regretting the tone of Chega's presentation, the deputy from Iniciativa Liberal Rodrigo Mello Gonçalves rejected “prior convictions”, defending the principle of presumption of innocence and the investigation by the competent authorities of everything that happened and led to the death of a citizen in Cova da Moura, expressing solidarity with the Carris Metropolitana driver who is hospitalized and with all the populations...
The reinforcement of community policing in the municipality is another measure advocated in the motion, urging the Government to inform local authorities of the restructuring plan for the police stations planned for the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. Rui Paulo Figueiredo, from the PS, also criticised Chega's intervention, regretting that there are "those who seek to associate security problems with immigration".
“Sliping a little into a certain populism, I would even say that most of the criminals in my parish, the people who traffic drugs, have the same skin colour as me and the Chega MP, so unfortunately it is a shot at the wrong target in this matter”, declared Miguel Coelho.
