The Portuguese government will once again call the 108,000 immigrants whose residency applications were denied, giving them the opportunity to regularize their situation. The majority of the applications were rejected due to failure to pay the fees required by law.
Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum will once again call on immigrants who had their residence applications in Portugal denied to regularize their situation
The president of AIMA stated that the second call for immigrants will be made administratively. In other words, the agency will send a formal notice to citizens by email, following the model used in the initial call for the process of evaluating residency applications. Neither he nor Armindo Freitas made it clear, however, whether there will be any type of punishment for the 108,000 immigrants, such as a fine.
“With this new opportunity to regularize documents, the Government also avoids a wave of legal action, since several immigrants could file lawsuits, and the courts are already overloaded with lawsuits against AIMA,” she highlighted. For lawyer Tatiana Kazan, the government's decision is more than fair.
