Portugal launches website for automatic residence for CPLP

The virtual platform will be available Monday morning and will benefit thousands of Brazilians and Africans from the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP)

The Portuguese government presented the digital platform that will allow the automatic regularization of the authorization and renewal of residence processes.

The virtual platform will be available Monday morning on the website of the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) and on eportugal.gov.

The measure will benefit Brazilians and other foreigners from African countries that, like Brazil, are part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP).

It is an emergency exit for automatic granting of residence to foreigners who have already entered the process via employment contract (expression of interest) until December 31, 2022.

The measure could solve the problem of around 150,000 people, most of them Brazilian immigrants who have been trying to regularize the situation for months, and even years.

This is what is foreseen in the first phase, which will also serve those who the government issued CPLP visas after October 21, 2022.

In the second phase, CPLP citizens with expressions of interest submitted after January 1st and who entered Portugal regularly will be assisted.

There are still thousands of Brazilians and foreigners who live and work in Portugal and are not covered by this emergency government solution.

The announcement of the digital platform is made less than a month before the possible extinction of the SEF, an immigration body congested with requests and lacking the structure to meet the growing demand.

According to the government, the service will be all digital, with automatic verification of data. Priced at €15, it promises completion of the process in 72 hours.

The CPLP authorization is valid for one year and renewable for two successive periods of two years. And it guarantees registration for access to public bodies in Portugal.
