The Socialist Party (PS) wants to eliminate deadlines for family reunification of minors, spouses or dependents in the foreigners' law and proposes that the general rule be one year, instead of the two years advocated by the Government.
These proposals were presented today at a press conference by the vice-president of the PS parliamentary group, Pedro Delgado Alves, on the eve of the parliament's debate and vote on the general, specific and final amendments put forward by the PSD and CDS for the re-evaluation of the law on foreigners.
A decree from the Government that was rejected by the Constitutional Court last August and, in relation to which, Pedro Delgado Alves said that the PS is available to "improve it" in a "constructive way, in dialogue", responding in a "more robust" way to questions of constitutionality.
But, before journalists, the vice-president of the socialist group made a point of emphasizing that the issues with the law on foreigners are not only constitutional, but also from the point of view of "avoiding losses" to the Portuguese economy and creating "safe channels" for migration.
At the press conference, Pedro Delgado Alves did not establish any "red line" that would allow the PS to abstain, at least.
He also admitted that the PSD/CDS bill, as currently drafted, could respond to the rules rejected by the Constitutional Court last August. "But there are other errors," he warned.
