PSD, Chega, IL and CDS will approve revision of the Nationality Law

The PSD, Chega, Iniciativa Liberal, and CDS will approve today in a final global vote the revision of the nationality law, legislation that requires the favorable vote of an absolute majority of deputies, at least 116 out of 230. We will have a new nationality law", the parliamentary leader of the PSD, Hugo Soares, told the Lusa news agency.

Regarding the version that emerged from the specialist process, the PSD and CDS accept a reformulation presented by Chega on a very specific point, according to which anyone who obtains it through manifestly fraudulent means loses their nationality.

In the Government's proposal, in this article specifically, it was provided that "the good faith ownership of original or acquired Portuguese nationality for at least 10 years is grounds for consolidation of nationality, even if the act that led to its attribution or acquisition is subject to administrative or judicial declaration of nullity".

In the talks that took place in recent days, according to a Social Democratic source, the PSD consistently refused to include a demand from Chega's president, André Ventura, that there be an automatic loss of nationality for serious crimes committed.

An amendment that, if accepted, according to the Social Democrats, would make the decree that came out of parliament unconstitutional.
