Residence cards are valid six months after lapsed, AIMA reports

Residence permits that expired until June 30 will be valid until April 15, 2026. Those due from July 1 are worth another six months.

After October 15, and without being able to complete all the renewals of the residence cards, the Government of Portugal gave a new deadline for the documents: another six months of validity. However, the extension is only valid for those who have requested the renewal of residence permits.

According to a statement issued by the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA), all cards that have expired between February 22 and June 30, 2025 – which have had their validity extended until October 15 – will be valid until 15 April 2026. The cards whose deadline ended from July 1, 2025 will have another six months of validity in relation to the date indicated.

If the foreigner residing in Portugal is stopped by the police, or is in any other situation where he needs to prove that he is legally in the country, it is no use walking only with the lapsed card. It is necessary to have the proof that the application for renewal was made. This request is made on the specific website of the AIMA portal. When placing the order, a document is issued — which has a QR code. This document must be printed and always accompany the expired card.

The document with extended validity is not considered valid outside Portugal. Only the card with the renewed residence permits you to travel to other European countries.

When the Government set the deadline of October 15 as a limit on the validity of the residence permits they had won between February 22, 2020 and June 30, 2025, at the end of June, the estimate was that the number of renewals should reach 370,000.
