In the first nine months of 2024, immigrants contributed 32% more than in the same period the previous year. Jobs are often low-paid and precarious.
There are 982,821 immigrant workers in Portugal, who contribute more than 2.6 billion euros to Social Security, according to calculations by the Ministry of Labor, Solidarity and Social Security. Among the countries of origin of the immigrant workers who contribute the most are Brazil, India and Nepal. The data is provided by Expresso .
The Nepalese community is already the third largest contributor to Social Security among immigrant communities living and working in Portugal. With 47,629 regularized workers working in the country, contributions collected between January and September of this year amount to 113,289,051.15 euros.
The contributions of these workers have helped to ensure the sustainability of Social Security. It is important to remember that the Social Security balance sheet is fragile due to the age structure of the Portuguese population. However, many of the jobs that immigrants – and Nepalese immigrants in particular – do are in low-wage, low-condition sectors.
