Lisbon, Jan 7, 2026 – Portugal’s immigration authority, AIMA, has issued a key clarification for international students who wish to transition from a student residence permit to a work-based authorization after completing their studies.
The update applies to students from higher education, professional training, and secondary education who plan to remain in Portugal for employment purposes once their academic programs end.
According to AIMA, students who move from studying to working in Portugal must apply for a change in the type of residence authorization they originally received. Authorities stressed that this transition is not considered a standard renewal, as the legal basis for residence changes from education to professional activity.
As a result, applications submitted through the Residence Permit Renewal Portal will not be accepted for this purpose.
Correct Application Process Explained
Students seeking to switch to a work-related residence permit must submit a new application using AIMA’s official Contact Us form.
When completing the form, applicants should select:
- Subject: Granting of Residence Authorization
- Subtype: Residence Visa Exemption Authorization – Article 122 (paragraphs o and p)
Using the correct channel is essential to avoid processing delays or rejection.
Legal Stay While Waiting for a Decision
AIMA also confirmed that students and researchers remain legally resident in Portugal while their application is under review, provided they carry:
- Their expired residence permit, and
- Proof of application submission, such as:
- Appointment request or notification, or
- Receipt confirming acceptance of the request
These documents serve as proof of lawful stay until the process is finalized.
The clarification offers much-needed guidance for international graduates entering the Portuguese labor market. Applying through the wrong channel or treating the process as a renewal could lead to unnecessary delays or legal uncertainty.
Students are advised to apply early, follow the correct procedure, and ensure they understand the difference between renewing a permit and changing its legal purpose.
